EVALUATION QUESTION 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback

10 Main points from our audience feedback focus group.
As our film is quite a niche product which also breaks many codes and conventions we thought it essential to premiere it to a sample of our target audience and gauge their responses:
  • they weren't as responsive as first hoped, this may show that our film has been targeted towards a much older audience
  • our promotional materials were well received, this shows our marketing was well planned and equip towards the audience we wanted to reach
  • they understood the importance of the tree as a motif
  • they enjoyed the hand held feel of the film, they found it easier to connect with
  • they drew parallels between our film and romeo and juliet, which is brilliant as this is exactly what we were hoping for
  • from the feedback we have received 25+ will be our new main demographic
  • our idea seemed to complex for some of the focus group
  • our third poster appealed much more to the females in the group
  • they really liked the magazine feature
  • overall we have deduced that our film will be much more apt towards an art house audience as the most responsive member of the group was a film student

EVALUATION QUESTION 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

this is our final poster to be released, it has the most professional look and also appeals more to female audiences and may even work in a cinema foyer as well as online

Family tree: article

This is a magazine feature for our shirt film and is to help drive the campaign and entice tru fans of film to go see our film. Research showed us that people who watch short films are people who are fans of cinema so by placing an article it will directly appeal to these people.

Family tree: second viral poster

This is our second viral poster for release after the original sneak poster, this gives away a little more than the original 0ne and has to be released accordingly as part of a viral campaign.

Family tree: final poster

this is my final poster i have changed the text to make it fit in more with the house style of our complete campaign and also the simpler text adds to the independent feel.

Family Tree poster first draft

This is the first draft of the poster I designed. I used a screen shot from the film to give it an authentic feel and mixed the opacity with a silhouetted background to allude towards some of the central themes and motif's of the film.

Short Film Production: Finding A Location

Here is an aerial view of a possible location for filming it is pretty ideal as its full of evergreen tree's and is a 2 minute walk from my house, which is quite handy for out of college filming.

And here are some stills of the location and possible tree's to be the center of the films premise:

Short Film Research: 7 pounds trailer

here is a trailer for the film 7 pounds it has a similar tone to our films as the protagonist loses family members through a car crash, which he is at fault for. I feel we can take some of the techniques used to create emotion and transfer them to our story.

Synopsis of New idea: Family tree

Family Tree
Young widow, Mr Sycamore is dwelling on his tragic life, his memories triggered by the tree near his house. The film opens with an establishing shot of the tree, then pans to the man at his desk looking out the window at the tree, sorrow drowning his face. The man then walks to the tree holding some flowers and it flashbacks to when he was a young boy, meeting a young girl at the tree. Flashback to present day and the man is still walking towards the tree, slowly and depressingly. Then we see the children running around the tree in a flashback. The present day man walks up to the tree and rests his head on it, we see a carving of a love heart and initials in it and he touches the wood. He then pulls a photo out of his pocket, it shows his wedding, under the tree where he is standing. Another flashback shows him and his new wife running from their wedding to the tree, the symbol of their love. The flashbacks move on to a picnic under the tree, with his wife and son. A pan around the tree and there is sat just the lonely old man on his own. The flashbacks become more fragmented, the family are in the car in the dark, rain pounding on the windows. Mr Sycamore is on his phone, for business and doesn't see the car swerving right into the side of him, the side where his wife and boy are sat. A blackout, screams and sirens are heard until we come back to the present day man, crying, crumpled at the bottom of the tree. In the dull distance a figure appears, a laughing, smiling girl running towards him in her wedding dress; his wife. For a brief second he stands up and walks towards her, tears wiped away, until she vanishes. Destroyed, the man grabs some rope and climbs the tree. The final thing we see is the mans legs, dangling from the tree, the tree that was once a symbol of love and family, is now drowned in death.
